The National Indian Health Board (NIHB), with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is pleased to announce a call for applications for two new Climate Ready Tribes (CRT) Initiative funding opportunities. NIHB will offer a CRT Initiative Award of up to $50,000 to up to three Tribes to conduct local work related to climate health. This may include improving and maintaining partnerships, identifying best practices, and implementing evidence-based programs and services. NIHB will also offer a CRT Initiative Mini-Award for Climate and Health Communication of up to $5000 to up to three Tribes to conduct low-cost, local work including climate health outreach, educational, or training opportunities. The project period for both projects will run approximately January 1, 2019 through June 30, 2019.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among Alaska Native people. Many cancers can be prevented. To understand the unique pattern of cancer among Alaska Native people, Dr. Anne Lanier and colleagues established the Alaska Native Tumor Registry (ANTR). The ANTR has been collecting cancer data for Alaska Native people since 1969. Since this time, these data have been used to help Alaska Native tribal health organizations understand the burden of cancer in their communities. The data have also been used in over 100 scientific publications, and 9 five-yearly reports. Our most recent five-year picture of cancer among Alaska Native people was published in 2015. Our Executive Summary of this report has been very useful to tribal health leaders in understanding this public health issue.
The ANTR is a population-based central cancer registry. This means we collect information from all over Alaska, not just from one hospital. We are funded by, and a member of, the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program. This program, which includes 17 other registries nationwide, is known for its high-quality cancer data collection. Each year, the SEER program assesses the quality of data submitted by each of its registries. This year, we were pleased to be awarded a First-Place Award by the SEER Program for data quality. This means that we achieved all 14 of the data quality metrics established by SEER as benchmarks for having high quality data. This is the first time in ANTR’s history that we have been awarded a first-place award!

Abstract submissions will close at 11:59 PM Pacific on Friday, November 16, 2018. No abstracts submitted after this deadline will be considered for inclusion.

Submission Rules
Professionals working in the field of U.S. tobacco control are welcomed and encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration. Conference organizers aim to include a broad selection of content from diverse perspectives in the meeting agenda. If you have work to share from your experience in the field that fits under one of the conference’s 11 Program Area topics, we invite and encourage you to submit your work for consideration.
Submission Requirements
You will be asked to provide the following information via the abstract submission process:
- Primary Presenter information (name, credentials, contact information, title, organization, brief biography, disclosure statement)
- Co-Presenter information (same)
- Session title
- Session description
- Three learning objectives for your session

All abstract submissions must be submitted through this online form; NCTOH organizers will not accept Word documents in lieu of online submissions.
Abstract Submission Deadlines
Abstract submissions will close on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:59 pm Pacific time. No abstracts will be accepted after this deadline.
Abstract review will be conducted by Program Area Subcommittees beginning in November 2018 and concluding in January 2019. Program Area Co-Chairs will review abstract scores and make final decisions by March 2019. Abstract selection notifications will be sent in April 2019.
Every abstract submitted will receive an email notification whether selected or declined.
