Bicycle Traffic Skills Course

The Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. Tribal Epidemiology Center (ITCA TEC)’s Tribal Motor Vehicle Crash Injury Prevention Project works to build Tribal capacity to prevent motor vehicle crashes and related injuries in the Phoenix-Tucson Service Areas. ITCA TEC partnered with a Tribal Police Department to provide Bicycle Traffic Skills Courses that were modeled after the League of American Bicyclists’ Curriculum.

This popular event promotes bicycle road safety and physical activity for injury and chronic disease prevention among Tribal youth.

Tribal youth participating in the class are provided helmet fitting and bicycle maintenance, taught basic bicycle handling, avoidance maneuvers, and rules of the road. The youth are taken on a community bicycle ride after the skills course. Technical assistance was provided by ITCA TEC to plan the event and assist on-site the day of the event with four Tribes in 2014 – 2015 and three Tribes in 2015 – 2016.
